Rhodiola isn't a food — it's a wild mountain root, traditionally harvested in Siberia and Scandinavia, and now sold as a standardized extract. Because wild stands have been over-harvested, it's now an internationally protected plant, so sustainable, cultivated sourcing matters.
Unlike a vitamin or a food-based nutrient, rhodiola doesn't come from the diet — you won't find it in groceries. You don't need a genetic test to use rhodiola. But your own liver-enzyme makeup can influence how strongly rhodiola affects certain medicines — another reason to coordinate with your provider if you take prescriptions.
Everyone's liver processes substances a little differently, partly because of inherited differences in drug-handling enzymes. One of these enzymes, called CYP2C9, helps break down some medicines (including the blood thinner warfarin).
